Monitoring of maize

Maize is one of the major crops grown in Poland, with the acreage of its cultivation over one million hectares. Like other plants, it is prone to damage, and sometimes even destruction by harmful organisms such as weeds, pathogens or pests.

In integrated pest management aimed at the protection of maize against the negative impact of pests, it is extremely important to prevent pest occurrence by annual use of prophylactic measures (mainly agrotechnical), and when these are insufficient, methods of direct control (mechanical, biological or chemical) should be used. Before treatments are introduced to protect plants against harmful organisms it is always necessary to:

- understand in detail the biology and harmfulness of the most important pests, including their identification in the field,

- monitor harmful organisms and their population size throughout the growing season,

- read current recommendations on the protection of maize against particular harmful species
