Plant protection programmes are developed to help farmers make choices on the use of chemical plant protection products for the control of harmful organisms in crops. It is associated with ongoing changes in the register of plant protection products, because each year over 300 authorizations for new product are issued, and about 500 changes in authorizations are made. Therefore, users should always read its label before the application of the plant protection product.
The programmes also contain recommendations regarding the use of plant protection products in the Integrated Production (IP) system and organic farming (EKO).
The following aspects should be considered with respect to chemical treatments for plant protection:
1) plant protection products should be chosen to minimize the negative impact of treatments on non-target organisms, in particular on pollinating insects and natural enemies of harmful organisms;
2) the number of treatments and the amount of used plant protection products should be minimized wherever possible;
3) plant protection products should be appropriately chosen and used in an alternating manner to prevent the development of resistance of harmful organisms to these products;
4) the effectiveness of treatments should be evaluated.
