Integrated plant production (IP) is a modern and voluntary Polish food quality system that relies on sustainable developments in technology and biology related to cultivation, plant protection and fertilization, and puts a strong emphasis on the protection of the environment and human health.
The implementation of the IP system allows farmers to produce healthy fruit and vegetables, in which the residues of pesticides, content of heavy metals, nitrates and other harmful substances are below the permissible levels. The high quality of crops from farms with the implemented IP system is confirmed by a certification and registered trademark. Apart from marketing benefits resulting from the sale of food that has officially certified quality, there are several other reasons why farmers should implement IP:
1) The principles of the system for integrated plant production are consistent with the principles of integrated pest management, and thus the implementation of IP currently means that the mandatory requirement to implement the principles of integrated pest management is fulfilled.
2) Farmers who hold the certificate under the IP system can apply for a refund of some expenses associated with participation in the IP system, and benefit from promotion under the Regional Programme for Rural Development.
3) The implementation of IP principles means that farmers meet the requirements under the Cross-Compliance system for direct payments with respect to plant protection and food safety in force since 1 January 2011.
4) The implementation of the IP system at the farm is essential for those farmers who need to prove their compliance with requirements relating to food safety. This applies to farmers selling their produce on the Polish market, and those exporting fruit and vegetables and their products outside Europe (e.g. China, Vietnam). Special programmes for plant protection developed by the Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice are essential in this regard.
5) IP, once implemented, helps farmers to meet many requirements on food safety and environmental protection established by many other commercial quality assurance systems, for example by supermarket chains. The IP system is supervised by the Main Inspectorate of Plant Health and Seed Inspection (PIORiN). However, following the approach adopted in the organic farming system, certification issues are delegated to relevant certification institutions.
Plant production and protection in the IP system must comply with detailed methods approved by the Chief Inspector of Plant Health and Seed Inspection, which are presented in this section.
In addition to methods of IP, we also present Methods for monitoring and alerting for the occurrence of plant pests, and detailed Programmes for the use of plant protection products dedicated for IP.
