The scale of damage caused to crops by some game species in Poland has increased dramatically over the last decade and is a serious problem in plant protection. Major contributors to this problem include:

  1. A rapid increase in the populations of wild boar, deer, fallow deer, elk and beaver,
  2. Climate change causing faster maturation and increased reproduction of wild boar (year-round), deer and other animal species, as well as increased survival due to mild winters,
  3. Changes in the biology and behaviour of wild boar, deer and other game species causing damage to crops (resistance to odour-based and other repellents),
  4. Changes in the species composition and acreage of crops (maize, rape, wheat and other cereals),
  5. Reduced biodiversity of agricultural and forest ecosystems,
  6. Significant increase in the yield of crops (new, high-yielding varieties, effective plant protection, intensive fertilization).
